Geophysical investigations are rapid and economic and are proven to be very effective in certain conditions. However, interpretation of geophysical data requires expertise and experience of the investigator. The investigation is mainly non-invasive and utilizes some specific properties of soil like density, electrical resistivity, seismic, magnetic, electromagnetic etc. to differentiate soil layers, obtain depth of water table, exhibit inclusion of foreign bodies, demarcate location of bed rock, etc. Apart from soil investigation, the geophysical methods are also extensively used in exploration of fossil fuels, mineral deposits, archeological investigation, dam leakage, contaminant flow, etc.
The rapid urbanization has led to a high growth in the number of vehicles leading to traffic congestions, higher air pollution, associated health risks, and higher number of road accidents leading to loss of life. Therefore, it is necessary to plan public urban transport projects in a sustainable way to support the desired economic growth, protect the environment and to improve the quality of life. In the congested urban landscape an underground metro system can provide a safe and comfortable transportation option. However, construction of underground stations and tunnels pose significant design and construction challenges. This presentation will cover case studies involving challenges in design and construction of underground stations in soft saturated ground conditions. The importance of instrumentation and monitoring will also be illustrated with a real-life case.
Hydropower is a sustainable source of renewable energy and is part of the solution to climate change. However, the development and construction period of a hydropower project is very long and therefore it is very challenging to finance them. The International Financial Institutions (IFIs) that typically finance hydropower projects as lenders have a mandate to achieve positive measurable sustainable outcomes on a project. The role of the Lender’s Engineer is possibly of an arbitrator enabling them to accomplish that objective by harnessing the healthy tension between the sponsor and the lenders regarding their approach to project development, construction and operation and perception of risks. The resulting project updates that are considered and agreed results in not only realising a successful project but also achieve positive outcomes for both the sponsor and the lender
There has been a significant change in the way pile foundations have been designed, installated and the various equipments that are available in the market. Until few years ago, a 1200mm diameter pile was considered a large diameter pile. However, in the last 2-3 years, pile diameters have substantially increased and thus it is now common to install 1200mm, 1500mm, 2m or even 3m diameter piles. Thus there is a need for the testing industry to keep pace with the current trends. Larger diameter piles need to be studied in more detail as not much past experience or codal requirements are available. The current presentation describes bi-directional load testing and high strain dynamic testing for large diameter piles. The presentation also describes static load test to 2600T which even today is not so common. Similarly, there has been a fundamental change the way SPT is computed on site in the last six months at few projects. The lecture also explains why SPT energy calibration is a requirement for the future and also that newer and more powerful rigs may result in fundamental changes in design. Advanced case studies in PIT or in CSL may also be discussed time permitting.
Trenchless technology is increasingly being used as a viable alternative for underground excavations throughout the world. The conventional cut and cover method for laying utilities, though simple, poses several issues, such as diversion of the traffic, continuous pumping in high ground water table regions and associated settlement of structures in the vicinity, diversion of existing utilities, safety of workers due to soil collapse, cost and time overruns. This lecture covers the aspects of the trenchless technology with regard to laying underground services in densely populated urban areas.
A two days workshop on “Know Your Concrete (KYC)” was held at MIT Auangabad in association with Progressive Expert Consultants, IGS Aurangabad Chapter, Civil Engineering Department MIT Aurangabad and Shri Tulsi Buildcon RMC on 25th and 26th Nov 2022. This workshop covers the topics like crushed sand, washed sand, Admixtures, RMC concrete check points , ITZ and durability test, RCPT (Rapid Chloride Permeability Test) test and many more. The participants for this workshop were UG & PG students, consultants, professor, etc. Total 60 participants attended the workshop.
An Expert talk on “Concrete Mix Design” was arranged for Third and Final year students on 11th October 2022. Er. Viresh Bafana, Regional Head Wonder Cements was the expert. He discuss the concrete mix design by IS code method. Also explain the different test conducted on concrete ingredients, fresh & hardened concrete. Some tests are demonstrated in wonder cement testing mobility van. Total 75 students were present for the expert talk.
An expert lecture of Er. Atul Nikam, Civil Engineer and Govt. Contractor, Aurangabad was conducted on 23/09/2022. Er. Atul Nikam is Alumni of Civil Engineering Department, MIT at UG. He has discussed the current opportunities for Civil Engineer in Government Sector and given the guidelines for Startup for own consultancy and contractor ship. He discussed the challenges faced and overcome by him during his career till date. He also shared the experiences by showing his completed major projects during his career. Students have enlightened with his technical and professional skills.
An expert lecture of Er. Ravindra Bansode was conducted on Engineer’s Day on 15/09/2022. Er. Ravindra Bansode is Alumni of Civil Engineering Department, MIT at UG as well as PG. He has completed his degree in Civil Engineering from MIT in 2010 and ME Civil Structure in 2015.

An expert talk on the topic “Liquefaction Hazard Analysis and Mitigation” was arranged by Civil Engineering Department of Marathwada Institute of Technology, Aurangabad in association with IGS Aurangabad Chapter, on 11th May 2022 at 11.30am. Prof. Mrs. Suman Jain, Faculty of Civil Engineering Department, Singhad College of Engineering, Lonavala, Maharashtra, was the resource person. More than 80 participants were present during the talk.
