Membership

 

IGS encourages active participation from all individuals, institutions, and organizations involved in geotechnical engineering. Various categories of membership are available to cater to different affiliations and interests aligned with the Society's objectives.

Individuals have the option to become either Members or Fellows, while Institutions can join as Institution Members. Additionally, business concerns can participate as Associate Members. The Society also acknowledges and honors members who have made notable contributions by awarding them the prestigious title of "Honorary Fellowship." Currently, 19 members have received this esteemed recognition. As of now, the IGS boasts a membership of over 5500 individuals.

The contributions of IGS members have played a significant role in the progress and advancement of India. Their active involvement and expertise have been instrumental in addressing complex challenges associated with various structures such as earth and rock fill dams, canals, buildings, roads, road embankments, bridges, tunnels, underground powerhouses, and offshore structures.

Categories of Membership And Required Qualifications

The membership of Indian Geotechnical Society is open to individuals, institutions and organizations whose activities/interests are consistent with the aims of the society. The categories of membership and the required qualifications are as follows.
MEMBERSHIP (LIFE)
The applicant should possess one of the following qualifications.
  • Degree in engineering or equivalent
  • Diploma in engineering with three years of experince in geotechnical engineering.
  • A Master's Degree in science with research experience of at least five years in geotechnical engineering.
FELLOWSHIP
The members can upgrade their membership to fellowship one can also apply directly for admission to Fellowship, fulfilling following conditions. The minimum qualifications for Fellowship are that applicant. (I) Should have a continuous membership of the society of 12 years or more.
Or
Should have attained the age of 45 on the date of application.
Should possess a degree in civil engineering awarded by a recognized university. In addition the applicant should possess one of the following qualifications:
  • Should possess a M.Tech/Ph.D/Equivalent. Degree in geotechnical engineering/in an allied area .
  • Should hold the post of Assoc. Professor or above in a reputed engineering college.
  • Should hold the post of Superintending Engineer / Equivalent in Government/ Public Sector Organizations.
  • Should hold the rank of Lt. Colonel or above/equivalent in the armed forces.
  • Should hold the position of Chief Executive Officer / Managing Director / Equivalent in private organizations.
  • Should possess high academic credentials / hold a responsible position which can be considered equivalent to the above qualifications.
