The Indian National Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering was established in the year 1948 soon after the second International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering held at Rotterdam.
The Society was affiliated to the International Society in the same year and since then it has strived to fulfil and promote the objectives of the International Society.
In December 1970, the name “Indian Geotechnical Society” was adopted. In January 1994 it hosted XIIIth International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering.
The Society celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in the year 2008 and racing towards Platinum Jubilee celebration. The Secretariat of the Society started functioning from its own house from the year 1996, after operating for a number of years from the premises of CBIP, Institution of Engineers (I) Delhi Centre, IIT Delhi and CSMRS.
Annual Conferences of the Society are an eagerly awaited event looked forward by our members and the geotechnical community as a whole. Earlier the Conferences were in the form of Symposium, Technical Sessions etc. The regular Conferences or Indian Geotechnical Conferences started (fondly named IGCs) in the year 1960. The Golden Jubilee Conference IGC-2011 is scheduled during Dec.15-17 at Kochi, Kerala.
The Society had the distinction of hosting the prestigious 13th ICSMGE in the year 1994 at New Delhi. The Society hosted Asian Regional Conference three times during 1965, 1975 and 2007 which is a unique record. Besides during the year it hosted 6th ICEG 2010 at New Delhi and look forward to hosting the major International Conference ICSMGE second time, once again the near future. |
