S. K. Prasad is the Professor of Civil Engineering at Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering, previously serving as a Professor & Head for six years at Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering and as Professor at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysuru for 32 years. With over 41 years of teaching and research experience, he holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Mysore, where he graduated with a first rank in 1982, earning four gold medals. He also holds a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, obtained in 1985, and a doctoral degree in 1996 from the University of Tokyo, Japan, funded by an Asian Development Bank scholarship.

Prasad served as a visiting Assistant Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand for the January 2006 term. He has published over 210 technical papers in national and international journals and conferences, supervised over 70 master’s dissertations, and guided five doctoral students, with three more currently under his mentorship. His research has been supported by grants from JSSMFE, AICTE, and DST.

He has delivered invited lectures in India, Japan, Malaysia, USA, and Singapore, and has chaired and served as a keynote speaker at numerous conferences. Prasad developed the Earthquake Engineering Laboratory at his college, designing and fabricating a manual shaking table and weight sounding equipment. He is serving on the National Executive Council of the Indian Geotechnical Society for the term 2025-26 and organized the 1st Indo-Japan Workshop on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering in Kochi in 2011, 4th Indo-Japan workshop on Geotechnical Aspects of High Speed Rails in Aurangabad in 2024 and 1st Indo-Brazilian- Portugal workshop on tropical soils and ground improvement in Goa in 2025 along with several other national and international workshops.

As guest editor for a special issue on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering of the Indian Geotechnical Journal (Springer) in June 2013, he contributed significantly to the field. He has delivered lectures in five VTU-EDUSAT programs, coordinating four of them. In September 2015, he was a fellow of the Tamasek – National University of Singapore Foundation. Under his coordination, his college was recognized as one of the best-performing institutes in TEQIP – II, a World Bank-assisted Government of India project, successfully utilizing over Rs. 1650 Lakhs for various academic activities.

Prasad was a member of the National Technical Committee on Natural Disaster Management & Mitigation of the Indian Geotechnical Society and is a member of Technical Committee TC 203 on Geotechnical Hazards & Earthquake related problems of the International Society of Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical Engineering. He co-offered a GIAN program in December 2018 on Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation with Prof. Ikuo Towhata and delivered the Fifth Madhav Lecture Series of the Indian Geotechnical Society Hyderabad Chapter at JNTU Hyderabad on October 1, 2016, recognized as an “Outstanding performer in the field of Geotechnical Engineering.” In September 2018, he was honored by the Institution of Engineers (India) Mysore Center during the 51st Engineers Day celebrations as an “Outstanding achiever in Civil Engineering.” Additionally, he delivered the prestigious 27th Prof. B.K. Ramaiah Lecture at IISc, Bangalore on March 29, 2019, under the IGS Bangalore Chapter. Builders Association of India honoured him with ‘Teacher Extraordinaire’ award in 2025.
