Kerala with its peculiar geography with a length of over 600km and a width of less than 100km is bounded by the Western Ghats on the east and Arabian Sea on the west. While the hilly terrain on the east presents numerous problems associated with landslides and earthquakes, the coastal belt mostly comprises of very deep deposits of soft marine clays. The state thus provides a wide spectrum of challenges to geotechnical engineers.
