The Madras Chapter of the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) was established in 1988 and later named as IGS Chennai Chapter.  IGS Chennai Chapter has more than 1000 life members including many members from the parent body. The chapter has been quite active since its inception and regularly organises seminars, workshops and invited talks. The National Conference IGC-1983 was held at IIT Madras, Chennai. IGS Chennai Chapter organised the Indian Geotechnical Conference (IGC) in the years 1996,2006 and 2016. The Chapter also organised the 4th and 8th Indian Young Geotechnical Engineering Conference (IYGEC) in the year 2013 and 2021 respectively. The chapter also organised the Sixth International Geotechnical Symposium (6IGS-Chennai) in the year 2015 and the first Symposium on Geotechnical Aspects of Heritage Structures (SGHS) in the year 2019.
