History of Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS)
The Indian National Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering was established in the year 1948, soon after the second International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering held at Rotterdam.
The Society was affiliated to the International Society in the same year and since then it has strived to fulfil and promote the objectives of the International Society.
In December 1970, the name Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) was adopted. In January 1994 it hosted 13th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ICSMGE).
The Society celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in the year 2008 and racing towards Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The Secretariat of the Society started functioning from its own house since 1996, after operating for a number of years from the premises of CBIP, Institution of Engineers (I) Delhi Centre, IIT Delhi and CSMRS.
Annual Conference of the Society is an eagerly awaited event looked forward by our members and the geotechnical community as a whole. Earlier the Conferences were in the form of Symposium, Technical Sessions etc. The regular Conferences popularly known as Indian Geotechnical Conferences (IGCs) started in the year 1983.
The Society celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 1998 at New Delhi when four day Conference was organized as IGC-1998, the extra day devoted to Golden Jubilee activities. The entire year 2008 was celebrated as Diamond Jubilee Year when most of the IGS Chapters were encouraged to organize activities thought the year. It culminated with the Grand Finale during IGC-2008 at Bangalore.
The Society not only had the distinction of hosting the prestigious 13th ICSMGE in the year 1994 at New Delhi. It hosted Asian Regional Conference three times during 1965, 1975 and 2007 which is a unique record. Besides these activities, it hosted 6th ICEG 2010 at New Delhi and look forward to hosting the major International Conference ICSMGE second time, once again the near future.
